- Cairn an Tuirc
Probably around the 1960s there used to be a small portable fibre rope tow permanently fixed on Cairn an Tuirc of around 200m in length covering a vertical ascent of approximately 75m, reaching up to 900m, and put in place by the Aberdeen Ski Club, though the tow belonged to the Scottish Ski Club.
The rope tow followed an easy angled north facing gully - known as "Turkey Gully" - which was known for its good snow holding. Members of the Aberdeen Ski Club and the Scottish Ski Club erected a commodious wooden hut beside the tow.
The Aberdeen Ski Club's handbook points out that the hut was constructed "for your special benefit, so that you may shelter inside, rubbing sodden shoulders with what seems like the full membership of both clubs, looking out through the storm-proof windows, bulging under the pent-up fury of the Arctic blizzards, which is the choicest feature of this locale."
The lift probably hasn't run since the 1970s or early 1980s, and you can still see some remnants of it on the hillside - namely the concrete blocks used for the foundations.
On the Landranger OS Map 43 the small tow is still marked, and can be seen at grid reference 174810, around 4 miles north of Glas Maol. The hut is also still shown, though like the tow, no longer exists. |
